The Wim Hof Method

Review by A. Elsworth Boss – Word Press – August 18, 2024

“Wim Hof has inspired millions of people to use just their bodies and breath to heat, then heal themselves of a laundry list of chronic illnesses.  Doubtful you say? I thought so until I discovered the scientific research from real scientists around the world proving these ‘impossible’ claims were in fact true.  This book is a valuable guide to anyone looking to take better control of the health, heat and untapped potential locked away within all of us. . . . James Nestor – New York Times bestselling author of Breath.”

The ‘Ice Man’ earned his name by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro wearing shorts in temperatures below freezing, running a half marathon above the Arctic Circle barefoot, and standing in a container while covered with ice cubes for 112 minutes.  He holds 26 Guines Book world records.

Wim Hof has been the subject of scientific studies at universities such as The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, The New York Academy of Science, The Feinstein Institute and the University of Minnesota Medical School.  In one such study after being submerged to the neck in ice water, he was injected with the endotoxin (bacteria) – E. coli, so that the doctors could observe his immune system response.  He performed his patented breathing technique and after four hours he experienced no ill effects from the injection.

After doctors examined his blood sample for the third time, they concluded that he consciously performed something previously thought to be imposable.  He used his mind and breathing method to control his autonomic nervous system.  He actively suppressed the inflammatory markers II-6 and II-8 which gave him the ability to produce antibodies that could cure a laundry list of autoimmune diseases and conditions from cancer to bipolar disorder.

In accordance with scientific protocol a control study was performed.  The Ice Man returned one month later accompanied by 12 people trained in the Wim Hof Method.  They were injected with the E-Coli bacteria.  At the completion of the experiment they were medically examined and the results were compared to 16,135 other subjects.  Unlike the larger control group, the 12 WHM subjects experienced no harmful health effects or symptoms due to the injections.  The Wim Hof students where able to suppress the inflammatory markers II-6 and II-12 and avoided sickness.

There are three pillars to the Wim Hof Method, exposure to cold, breathing exercises and meditation.  Cold exposure can be achieved by taking daily showers in cold water.  The breathing and meditation methodology is explained in chapter four and on his website www.wimhofmethod.com .  I personally have adopted the Ice Man’s Methods and practice them daily.  Do you like to read?
